Describe it as a spa shower and people want it; call it a handicap shower and they wince. Same shower. Here’s the best-kept secret in bathroom design.

Designers call it curbless and charge a premium for the look. Now describe the identical shower to someone as a “handicap shower” and watch them wince. Same shower. It’s the best-kept secret in bathroom design: the luxury option and the safe option are the same option.
The curb exists to keep water in — and that’s a real job. A curbless shower doesn’t skip it; it solves it properly, with the floor sloped gently toward the drain, a linear drain where the design calls for it, and full waterproofing under every inch of tile. That last part is why this isn’t a do-it-yourself project: get the slope or the membrane wrong and you’ve bought a leak, not a shower.
The most common project we build is removing a rarely used tub and building a walk-in or curbless shower in its place — often with a built-in bench, a hand shower, and grab bars anchored into solid blocking while the wall is open. If anyone in the house plans on getting older — and that’s everyone — it’s the smartest square footage in the home.
Tile, panel systems, benches, drains and glass are easier to judge in person. Visit the showroom at 1138 Weems Street in Pearl, or book a free aging-in-place assessment and we’ll look at the bathroom — and the whole house — in one visit.
