Bathrooms are wet rooms, so the tile — and what’s behind it — has to handle moisture. Here’s how to choose tile that lasts.

On floors and shower pans, look for a textured or matte finish or small mosaic tiles — more grout lines mean more grip underfoot. Save the big, glossy tiles for walls.
Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own. What keeps water out of your walls is the waterproof membrane behind the tile, a properly sloped shower pan, and sealed corners. Done right, your bathroom lasts for decades; done wrong, no tile can save it. More in our care guides and on the shower remodeling page.
Large-format tile means fewer grout lines and a clean, modern look; mosaics add grip and detail; subway tile is a timeless classic. We carry Daltile and MSI and can show you full displays. See the tile page.
Small porcelain or stone mosaics are ideal — the extra grout lines add slip resistance and let the floor slope to the drain.
It’s beautiful but porous, so it needs sealing and more care. Porcelain is lower-maintenance for wet areas.
Proper waterproofing behind the tile, a vented exhaust fan, sealed grout, and wiping the surfaces down all keep mold away.
Yes — large-format tile with minimal grout lines can actually make a small bathroom feel larger.
