The Main Door Styles

Shaker — a clean recessed flat panel in a simple square frame. The most popular style because it fits both traditional and modern kitchens and never dates. Raised Panel — a contoured center panel that stands slightly proud of the frame; warm and traditional. Flat / Slab — a single smooth panel with no frame; the most modern, minimal look, especially in frameless cabinets. Inset — doors set flush inside the frame for a tailored, furniture-quality look. Beaded & specialty — bead-board panels, glass fronts and open shelving for accents and islands.

Finishes Change Everything

The same door looks completely different painted, stained or glazed. Painted gives a smooth, current, furniture-like surface (best on MDF or smooth wood); stained shows off natural grain and hides everyday wear; glazed adds an antiqued accent in the door’s detail lines. Always look at samples in your own lighting — paint and stain read very differently at home than on a screen.

See Them in Person

We carry custom and semi-custom lines including Executive Cabinetry, Showplace Cabinetry, Designers Choice, Tedd Wood and Walnut Ridge Cabinetry. We keep door and finish samples on display so you can compare side by side. Start on our cabinetry page, and if you’re remodeling, see how it fits together in our kitchen remodeling guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Shaker door — a recessed flat panel in a square frame — is by far the most popular because it works in both traditional and modern kitchens.

Flat or slab doors read the most modern, especially in frameless cabinets with a smooth painted or wood finish.

Painted gives a smooth, current look and resists showing grain; stained highlights natural wood and hides wear well. It comes down to the look you want.

A glaze is an accent applied into the door’s detail lines for an antiqued, traditional look. It works best on raised-panel doors.
