Choosing Carpet Padding: The Part Everyone Forgets

The cushion under your carpet is one of the most important — and most overlooked — parts of the job. Here’s how to get it right.

Why Padding Matters

The right pad makes a budget carpet feel better, makes a premium carpet last years longer, absorbs sound and adds insulation. The wrong pad can actually void your carpet warranty.

Density and Thickness

Two specs matter: density (pounds per cubic foot) and thickness. For most homes, a 6–8 lb pad, 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick (most makers cap it at 7/16″). Stairs and high-traffic areas want a firmer, denser pad.

The Big Mistake

Thicker is not better. A pad that’s too thick or too soft lets the carpet backing flex and wrinkle — damaging the carpet and voiding warranties. We match the pad to your specific carpet’s spec sheet.

Pad Types

Rebond (bonded foam) is the common all-rounder; firmer prime foam and rubber suit high traffic and stairs; fiber/felt is used under Berber. We never reuse old, compressed padding. See our carpet page.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most rooms, a 6–8 lb density pad, 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick. Stairs and high traffic want a firmer, denser pad. We match it to your carpet.

No — too thick or soft a pad lets the carpet flex and wrinkle, which damages it and can void the warranty. Density matters more than thickness.

We don’t recommend it — old pad is compressed and worn. Fresh pad is part of a proper install and protects your new carpet.

Yes — using a pad outside the carpet’s spec can void the warranty. We match the pad to the manufacturer’s requirements.
