How to Choose the Right Countertop for Your Kitchen

New countertops are one of the highest-impact upgrades in any kitchen or bath. Here is how to weigh looks, durability, maintenance and budget so you pick a surface you’ll love for decades.

Start With How You Use the Space

The best countertop for a busy family kitchen is not the same as the best one for a guest bath or a butler’s pantry. Before you fall for a slab, think about how the space really gets used: Do you cook and chop constantly? Set down hot pans? Have kids and heavy traffic? Or is it a lower-use surface where looks matter most? Your honest answer narrows the field fast.

The Five Things That Actually Matter

FactorWhat to look for
DurabilityResistance to scratches, chips and heat. Quartz and granite lead here.
MaintenanceWhether it needs periodic sealing (natural stone) or is essentially maintenance-free (quartz).
LookNatural, one-of-a-kind veining vs. consistent, engineered patterns.
Stain & water resistanceNon-porous surfaces shrug off spills; porous stone needs sealing.
BudgetMaterial, thickness, edge profile and how many seams your layout needs.

The Main Materials at a Glance

Quartz (engineered stone) is non-porous, never needs sealing, and offers the most consistent look — our most-recommended all-around surface. Granite is a natural stone with unique veining and excellent heat resistance; it needs periodic sealing. Marble is stunning and timeless but softer and more prone to etching, so it suits lower-use spaces or homeowners who embrace a lived-in patina. Porcelain and solid surface round out the options for specific needs. We go deeper in our quartz vs. granite vs. marble guide.

Don’t Forget Edges, Seams & Thickness

Two kitchens with the same slab can look and cost differently based on the details. Edge profiles (straight/eased, beveled, bullnose, ogee) change the whole feel. Seams are unavoidable on larger layouts — a good fabricator places them where they’re least visible. And thickness (2cm vs 3cm, or a built-up mitered edge) changes both looks and price. We walk you through all of it at your measure.

Brands We Carry

We fabricate and install quartz and natural stone from trusted lines including MSI Surfaces and Cambria Quartz. Come see full slabs in person — a 4-inch sample never tells the whole story of a natural stone’s movement and color.

See It in Your Kitchen

Countertops tie together your cabinets, floor and backsplash, so choose them alongside the whole room. Explore our countertops page, and if you’re remodeling, our kitchen remodeling guide shows how the pieces fit together.

Countertops for Mississippi Kitchens

Our Central Mississippi climate is hot and humid for much of the year, which is one more reason non-porous, low-maintenance surfaces are so popular here. Quartz shrugs off humidity and never needs sealing, while sealed granite handles heat beautifully for cooks who set down hot pans. If your kitchen opens to a patio or gets strong afternoon sun, ask us about how different finishes (polished vs. honed vs. leathered) hide fingerprints, water spots and wear in real daily use — it makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

We also help you coordinate the counter with the rest of the room: cabinet color, floor tone, backsplash and lighting all change how a slab reads. Because we handle flooring, cabinetry and countertops under one roof, we can pull it all together and show you real samples side by side in your own light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most kitchens use 3cm (about 1¼″) stone for a solid feel, or 2cm with a built-up edge. We help you match thickness to the look and the cabinet layout.
