The framed-vs-frameless choice shapes the look, the storage and the feel of your whole kitchen. Here’s how the two are built and how to pick.

Doors and drawers attach to that frame, giving the classic American look and a very rigid opening. A frameless cabinet (often called full-access or European) skips the face frame, so the doors mount directly to the box.
| Framed | Frameless | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Classic, traditional; a little frame shows between doors | Clean, modern; doors cover the whole box |
| Access | Slightly narrower openings | Wider openings, easier to reach drawers/shelves |
| Overlay options | Full, partial or inset | Always full overlay |
| Feel | Very sturdy front | Maximum usable space |
On a framed cabinet you also choose the overlay — how much of the frame the doors cover. Full overlay hides nearly all the frame for a current look; partial (standard) overlay shows more frame and is the traditional, budget-friendly choice; inset sets the doors flush inside the frame, like fine furniture (the most precise and premium). Frameless cabinets are always full overlay.
Neither is simply better — it’s about the look you want and how you use the space. Frameless suits modern kitchens and anyone who wants maximum access; framed suits traditional and transitional homes and offers the most overlay flexibility. We carry custom and semi-custom lines including Executive Cabinetry, Showplace Cabinetry, Designers Choice, Tedd Wood and Walnut Ridge Cabinetry. The best way to decide is to open the doors and drawers yourself — see our cabinetry page and visit the showroom.
Not necessarily — price depends more on the line, materials and finish you choose than on framed vs frameless. Both come in value and premium options.
Frameless cabinets give slightly wider openings and a bit more usable space since there’s no face frame, though smart storage inserts matter more than the box style.
We generally keep one style throughout a kitchen for a consistent look, but we can advise on your specific layout.
Inset means the doors sit flush inside the face frame rather than over it — a precise, furniture-quality (and premium) look available on framed cabinets.
