It’s the number-one laminate question. The honest answer: most laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof — but there’s more to it.

So standard laminate is water-resistant — it handles quick spills you wipe up — but not waterproof. Newer water-resistant laminates add tighter seals and coatings that buy you more time, but standing water is still the enemy.
Bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and dining rooms — dry areas where laminate’s durability and realistic look shine. For kitchens, baths, laundry and basements, luxury vinyl (LVP) is the safer, fully waterproof pick.
If you want a wood look in a wet-prone room and true waterproof peace of mind, go LVP. If it’s a dry room and you love a particular laminate, it’s a durable, affordable choice. See our laminate page and waterproof flooring options.
It handles quick spills you wipe up, but standing water can seep into the seams and swell the core. Don’t wet-mop or use steam mops.
Water-resistant resists moisture for a limited time; there is no truly waterproof HDF-core laminate. For waterproof, choose LVP or tile.
We recommend LVP or tile for bathrooms. Laminate is better kept to dry rooms.
Sweep or vacuum, then damp-mop with a laminate-safe cleaner. Avoid excess water and steam.
