What Sheen Means

Sheen is how much light the paint reflects. Flatter paints hide wall imperfections but are less washable; shinier paints are tougher and easier to clean but show every bump. The trick is matching sheen to the room.

Where Each Sheen Shines

SheenLookBest for
Flat / matteNo shine; hides flawsCeilings, low-traffic walls
EggshellSoft, subtle glowLiving rooms, bedrooms, most walls
SatinSlight sheen, washableKitchens, baths, hallways, kids’ rooms
Semi-glossShiny, very durableTrim, doors, cabinets, high-moisture areas

Rules of Thumb

Quality Paint Matters

Better paint covers in fewer coats, levels smoother and lasts longer. We use quality paints, including Ferrell Calhoun Paint, and help you pick the right color and sheen for every room. See our painting page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eggshell for most walls, satin for kitchens, baths and hallways, flat for ceilings, and semi-gloss for trim and doors.

Flat and matte hide flaws best because they reflect the least light; the trade-off is they’re less scrubbable.

Semi-gloss and gloss are the toughest and easiest to clean, which is why they’re used on trim, doors and cabinets.

Satin is a great all-rounder for busy areas, but flatter sheens look better on ceilings and hide flaws on large walls.
