SPC vs. WPC Waterproof Flooring: What’s the Difference?

Waterproof flooring comes in two main cores — SPC and WPC. They look alike but feel and perform differently. Here’s how to choose the right one.

Both Are 100% Waterproof

SPC and WPC are the two rigid-core families of luxury vinyl. Both are fully waterproof — water won’t hurt the core — so both are excellent for kitchens, baths, laundry rooms and basements. The difference is what the core is made of, which changes the feel underfoot and the dent resistance.

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite)

SPC has a dense, rigid stone-composite core. That makes it thinner, extremely dent- and durable, and very stable over imperfect subfloors — great for high-traffic homes, commercial use, and rooms with big temperature swings. The trade-off: it’s firmer and a bit louder underfoot, so a good pad helps.

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite)

WPC has a softer, foamed core that feels warmer, quieter and more cushioned underfoot — a more comfortable, “premium” feel. It’s usually a bit thicker. The trade-off: it’s slightly less dent-resistant under very heavy point loads than SPC.

Which Should You Pick?

For busy households, pets, and commercial spaces, SPC is the tougher pick. For comfort underfoot in living areas and bedrooms, WPC feels great. We carry both in lines like COREtec, TRUCOR, Shaw and Mohawk. Compare on our waterproof flooring page and the flooring guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — both have 100% waterproof cores, so water won’t damage them. They’re both great for kitchens, baths and basements.

SPC’s denser stone core resists dents better and is more stable, making it ideal for heavy traffic and pets. WPC is very durable too, just softer.

WPC — its foamed core is warmer, quieter and more cushioned. SPC is firmer but a quality underlayment helps.

Some planks have it attached. SPC especially benefits from a pad for sound and comfort; we recommend the right one for your subfloor.
