The Types of Carpet (Pile Styles)

“Carpet” really means several very different looks and feels. The pile — how the yarn is cut or looped — is what you see and walk on. The little diagrams below show a side view of how each one is built.

Plush / Saxony

Smooth, even, formal cut pile. Luxurious underfoot with a soft sheen — but it shows footprints and vacuum marks.

Best for: formal rooms, bedrooms

Textured

The most popular choice. Slightly varied, twisted cut fibers hide footprints and traffic — a true everyday carpet that forgives a busy household.

Best for: family rooms, whole-home

Frieze (Shag)

Long, tightly twisted fibers that flop in different directions. Casual, and very good at hiding wear and dirt.

Best for: casual living, kids

Berber / Loop

Uncut loops — dense, flat, and extremely durable. Note: pet claws can snag loops, so cut-pile is usually better with animals.

Best for: high traffic, basements, offices

Pattern (Cut & Loop)

Mixes cut and looped yarn at different heights to create sculpted patterns and texture. Hides soil well and adds visual interest.

Best for: stairs, halls, design accents

Carpet Fibers Explained

The fiber is what the carpet is made of — it drives durability, stain resistance, softness, and price more than anything else.

FiberStrengthsWatch-outsBest for
NylonThe most durable and resilient fiber. Bounces back from heavy traffic and cleans well.Costs a bit more; choose a stain-treated version.Stairs, halls, busy homes
Polyester (PET)Very soft, richly colored, excellent stain resistance, budget-friendly.Crushes faster in high traffic than nylon.Bedrooms, low-traffic rooms
Triexta (SmartStrand)Outstanding built-in stain & soil resistance with better resilience than standard polyester.Newer fiber; quality varies by line.Pets & kids, family living
WoolNatural, beautiful, naturally soil-resistant and very long-lasting.Premium price; spot-clean carefully.Luxury, formal spaces
Olefin (Polypropylene)Moisture- and fade-resistant, budget-friendly — common in Berber and indoor/outdoor.Less resilient; can crush and hold oily soil.Basements, patios, low traffic

How to Judge Carpet Quality (Twist, Face Weight & Density)

This is where most people get lost — and where a cheaper carpet gets dressed up to look like a good one. Three numbers tell the real story, and you can check them yourself on any sample:

5–7
TWIST (TPI)
turns per inch — higher resists crushing
35–60 oz
FACE WEIGHT
ounces of yarn per square yard
2,000+
DENSITY RATING
how tightly fibers are packed

1. Twist (TPI) — the most overlooked number

Twist is how many times the yarn is twisted in one inch (turns per inch). The fibers are heat-set so they hold that twist. Look for a twist of 5 or higher for busy areas — a tighter twist is the single best predictor that a carpet won’t “ugly out” and mat down in the traffic lanes. Look at the tips: crisp, tight, defined tips are good; blooming, fuzzy, untwisting tips will crush.

2. Face Weight — how much yarn is there

Face weight is the ounces of pile yarn per square yard, usually 35–60 oz for residential carpet. More yarn generally means a more substantial carpet — but only if it’s packed tightly. A high face weight with a tall, loose pile can still be a weak carpet, which is why face weight alone never tells the whole story.

3. Density — the number that matters most

Density is how tightly the fibers are packed into the backing. A density rating of 2,000 or higher gives a firm, sturdy surface that handles heavy foot traffic. Two ways to judge it: (1) press your thumb in — quality carpet resists and springs back; (2) bend a sample backward like a book — if you can easily see the backing “grin” through the fibers, the pile is thin and will crush sooner.

The fair-comparison rule: face weight only compares apples to apples when the fiber and style match. Always weigh twist and density alongside it. Many manufacturers also publish a PAR rating (Performance Appearance Rating) — an independent walk-test that simulates a year of traffic; 3.0+ is good, 3.5+ is excellent. We’ll show you these specs on every sample so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

Don’t Forget the Padding (It Makes or Breaks the Job)

The cushion under the carpet is the most overlooked part of the job — and one of the most important. The right pad makes a budget carpet feel better, makes a premium carpet last years longer, absorbs sound, and adds insulation. The two specs that matter are density (measured in pounds per cubic foot) and thickness.

Pad typeWhat it isTypical density / feelBest for
Rebond (bonded foam)The most common pad — recycled multi-colored foam scrap pressed together. Great all-around comfort and value.6–8 lbMost rooms, whole-home
Prime foamSolid (not recycled) polyurethane foam. Firmer, consistent, good for cut-pile carpet.Higher firmnessLiving areas, cut pile
Memory foamPlush, pillow-soft top layer over a support base. Wonderful underfoot — but keep it firm enough for warranty.Comfort-ratedBedrooms, low traffic
Rubber (flat slab / waffle)Dense and very durable; the firmer flat-rubber version is excellent under heavy traffic and on stairs.Premium / firmHigh traffic, stairs, commercial
Fiber / feltFirm, thin, stable — keeps carpet from shifting. Common under Berber and on stairs.Dense / thinBerber, stairs, basements
6–8 lb
DENSITY
recommended for most homes (firmer = more durable)
3/8–1/2″
THICKNESS
most makers cap it at 7/16″
Firmer
STAIRS & HIGH TRAFFIC
denser/thinner pad for stability
Important warranty note: a pad that is too thick or too soft lets the carpet backing flex, stretch and wrinkle — and that can void your carpet warranty. Thicker is not better. We match the pad to your specific carpet’s spec sheet, and we never reuse old, compressed padding.

Best Carpet For…

Pets

Triexta (SmartStrand) or stain-treated nylon, cut-pile texture — hides hair, resists claws and accidents.

High traffic

Dense, lower-pile nylon with a tight twist, or a firm loop/Berber that won’t crush in halls and on stairs.

Bedrooms

Soft polyester or plush — comfort matters more than heavy wear resistance here.

Allergies

Low-pile, dense carpet with a quality pad traps fewer allergens and vacuums cleaner; pair with regular HEPA vacuuming.

Budget

Quality polyester gives great color and softness for less — ideal for lower-traffic rooms.

Cleaning & Care — Make It Last Years Longer

Everyday routine

  • Vacuum often. High-traffic areas 2–3× a week, the rest weekly. Built-up grit is like sandpaper at the base of the fibers — it’s what actually wears carpet out.
  • Set the right height. Use a vacuum with adjustable height and a good filter; on Berber/loop, use suction-only or a gentle brush so you don’t fuzz the loops.
  • Walk-off mats at every entry catch most of the dirt before it reaches the carpet. Rotate furniture occasionally to even out wear.

When something spills

  • Act fast and blot — never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain in and frays the fibers. Blot from the outside in with a clean white cloth.
  • Start with cool water. For most fresh spills, water and blotting do the job. Add a tiny bit of mild dish soap if needed, then rinse and blot dry.
  • Don’t over-wet and don’t use harsh or bleach-based cleaners — they can set stains, strip stain treatment, or bleach the color. Test any product in a hidden spot first.
SpillQuick response
Pet accidentBlot up, rinse with cool water, then an enzyme cleaner made for pet stains/odor.
Red wine / Kool-AidBlot, apply cool water (club soda works), keep blotting; treat promptly before it sets.
Grease / oilBlot, small amount of dish soap in water, rinse and blot dry.
Coffee / teaBlot, cool water, mild detergent; repeat — tannins are stubborn so be patient.
MudLet it dry completely, vacuum up the crumbs, then spot-clean the rest.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional hot-water extraction (“steam”) every 12–18 months. It pulls out the deep grit a vacuum can’t reach and refreshes the pile.
  • Keep the receipts. Many manufacturer warranties require professional cleaning on a schedule to stay valid.
  • Close the blinds on big sun-exposed windows when you can — constant direct sun can fade any carpet over years.

Carpet FAQ

With quality fiber and proper care, residential carpet lasts about 5 to 15 years. A higher face weight, a tight twist, dense pile, good padding, and professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months all push you toward the longer end of that range.

Look for a stain- and soil-resistant fiber like triexta (Mohawk SmartStrand) or treated nylon, in a cut-pile (not looped) style so claws can't snag. A textured or patterned surface also hides hair and footprints between vacuuming.

Nylon is the most durable and resilient fiber and is the better choice for stairs, hallways, and busy family rooms. Polyester is softer, very stain-resistant, and easier on the budget, which makes it great for bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms.

For busy areas look for a twist (TPI) of 5 or higher and a face weight in the upper part of the 35-60 oz range, paired with high density. Twist and density resist crushing far more than face weight alone.

For most rooms, a 6-8 lb density pad that is 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick (most makers cap it at 7/16 inch). Too thick or too soft a pad lets the carpet flex and can void the warranty. Stairs and high traffic want a firmer, denser pad.

Most homeowners pay a price that depends on the fiber, twist, face weight, padding, and room layout. We give you an exact, no-obligation price after a free in-home measure.

Carpet is installed over a clean, flat subfloor with fresh padding - not over old carpet. We remove and haul away your old flooring as part of the job. Carpet can go over concrete with the right pad and over most subfloors.

Vacuum high-traffic areas a couple of times a week, blot spills immediately, and have the carpet professionally hot-water-extraction cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Many manufacturer warranties actually require professional cleaning on a schedule - keep the receipts.
