What Laminate Actually Is

Laminate is built in layers over a dense wood-fiber core. Knowing them helps you judge quality:

1. Wear layerA clear, tough melamine top coat that resists scratches, fading and stains — rated by its AC class (see below).
2. Decor layerA high-resolution photo of wood (or stone) with realistic embossing you can feel — the look.
3. HDF coreA high-density fiberboard core that gives laminate its rigidity, dent resistance and that solid, wood-like feel underfoot.
4. Backing / balancing layerStabilizes the plank against moisture and warping; better lines add an attached pad.

AC Rating — the Durability Number to Check

Laminate’s wear is graded by Abrasion Class (AC). Higher means tougher:

AC3
GENERAL residential — most homes
AC4
HEAVY residential / light commercial
AC5
COMMERCIAL / very heavy traffic

For a busy family home with pets, AC4 is a sweet spot — tough, without paying for commercial-grade.

Water-Resistant vs. Waterproof Laminate

Older laminate and water were enemies — that has changed. Many modern laminates are water-resistant (they shrug off spills wiped up promptly), and some are rated waterproof for a set number of hours. Just know the honest order of things: for a bathroom or laundry that sees standing water, LVP or tile is still the safer bet; laminate shines in living areas, bedrooms, halls and stairs. We’ll match the product to the room.

Laminate vs. LVP — Which Should You Pick?

Choose Laminate when…

You want the hardest, most realistic wood look and feel underfoot, deep embossing, and excellent scratch resistance — in living rooms, bedrooms, halls and stairs, at a friendly price.

Choose LVP when…

You need true 100% waterproof performance for kitchens, baths, basements and laundry, with a softer, warmer, quieter feel underfoot.

Laminate FAQ

Many modern laminates are water-resistant and some are rated waterproof for a number of hours, which is a big improvement over older laminate. But for rooms that see standing water — bathrooms, laundry rooms — LVP or tile is still the safer choice. Laminate is excellent in living areas, bedrooms, halls and stairs.

Look for AC3 for general residential use, AC4 for heavy residential or light commercial (a great pick for busy homes with pets), and AC5 for commercial spaces. The AC number is the best single indicator of how well the surface resists wear.

Laminate gives the hardest, most realistic wood look and feel with excellent scratch resistance, ideal for living areas and bedrooms. LVP is fully waterproof and softer underfoot, making it better for kitchens, baths and basements. We help you match each room to the right one.

Sweep or dust-mop, then clean with a barely-damp microfiber and a laminate-safe cleaner. Never wet-mop or steam-mop laminate — standing water can swell the seams. Wipe spills promptly and use felt pads under furniture.

Often yes. Laminate is a floating click floor that can go over many existing hard, flat surfaces with the right underlayment. Over concrete we add a vapor barrier first. We check your subfloor and prep where needed.

Good-quality laminate lasts roughly 10–25 years depending on the AC rating, the traffic, and how it’s cared for. Choosing an adequate AC class for your traffic and keeping water off the seams are the two biggest factors.
