Why LVP Took Over

LVP (and its tile cousin, LVT) gives you the look of wood or stone with advantages real materials can't match: it's 100% waterproof, extremely scratch- and dent-resistant, warm and quiet underfoot, easy to clean, and friendlier on the budget. It's the go-to for kitchens, baths, basements, and busy homes with kids and pets.

What's Inside a Plank (and Why It Matters)

Quality LVP is built in layers. Knowing them is how you compare two planks that look identical in the store:

1. Wear layerA clear, tough top coat (measured in mil) that takes all the abuse. This is the single most important spec — see below.
2. Printed filmA high-resolution photo layer that creates the realistic wood or stone look. Better planks use more varied images so it doesn't repeat.
3. Rigid coreThe backbone — SPC or WPC (see below). It's what makes the plank waterproof and dimensionally stable.
4. Attached underlaymentMany planks include a foam or cork pad on the bottom for warmth, comfort and quiet.

Wear Layer — the #1 Durability Spec

The wear layer is measured in mil (thousandths of an inch). It is the best predictor of how long the floor will look good:

6–8 mil
LIGHT use / bedrooms, low traffic
12 mil
RECOMMENDED minimum for most homes
20 mil+
PETS, kids, heavy traffic & commercial

The jump from 12 mil to 20 mil can mean years of extra life against grit, claws and dragged chairs. For a busy Mississippi household with pets, we usually steer you to 20 mil.

Core Type: SPC vs. WPC

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite)

A dense core made with limestone powder. It's rigid, extremely dent-resistant, and very stable in temperature swings — the best choice over concrete, in basements, sunrooms, and high-moisture or high-traffic areas. It feels firmer and a touch cooler underfoot.

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite)

A core blended with wood-like polymer. It's softer, warmer and quieter underfoot with a more cushioned feel — great for bedrooms, living areas, and upper floors where comfort matters most.

LVP FAQ

Yes — true rigid-core (SPC/WPC) LVP is 100% waterproof, meaning the plank itself won't swell or buckle from water. That's why it's ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements. Be careful with products only labeled water-resistant; those just buy time.

Think of the wear layer in mil: 6-8 mil for light-traffic bedrooms, 12 mil as a solid minimum for most homes, and 20 mil or more for pets, kids, heavy traffic and commercial spaces. It's the single best predictor of how long the floor stays looking good.

SPC has a dense stone-based core that's rigid, very dent-resistant and stable, making it best over concrete, in basements, sunrooms and high-traffic areas. WPC has a softer, warmer core that feels more cushioned underfoot, which is nice in bedrooms and living areas.

Often yes. Most rigid-core LVP is a floating click-lock floor that can go over many existing hard surfaces if they're clean and flat. We check your subfloor first and prep where needed so it locks tight and lies flat.

It's one of the best choices for them — waterproof against accidents and spills, and very scratch- and dent-resistant, especially with a 20-mil wear layer. It's also warm and quiet underfoot and easy to wipe clean.

Sweep or dust-mop, then damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. No wax or polish needed. Use felt pads under furniture and avoid abrasive pads or harsh solvents that can dull the wear layer.
