Both are clay tile fired in a kiln, but they perform differently, and that decides where each belongs.
Fired denser and harder, porcelain absorbs almost no water (0.5% or less), so it’s extremely tough, frost-proof and stain-resistant. It’s the right call for floors, showers, wet areas and outdoors, and it holds up to heavy traffic. Through-body and color-body porcelain even hide chips.
A bit softer and more porous, ceramic is easier to cut and usually more affordable. It’s excellent for walls, backsplashes and light-traffic floors, with a huge range of colors and finishes.
The PEI scale (1–5) rates a tile’s surface hardness and tells you where it can go:
For a busy home, we steer you to PEI 3 or higher on the floor. Also check the slip rating (COF) for bathrooms and entries — texture matters where it gets wet.
Kitchens, baths, entries, sunrooms, whole-home — porcelain for durability and easy cleanup.
Fully waterproofed walls and pans, with the right slope, niche and curbless options.
Subway, mosaic, and statement walls in the kitchen, laundry and bath.
Frost-proof porcelain pavers for porches, patios and pool surrounds.

Porcelain is denser and absorbs almost no water (0.5% or less), so it’s the better choice for floors, showers, wet areas and outdoors. Ceramic is a bit softer and more affordable and is excellent for walls, backsplashes and light-traffic floors.
Use PEI 3 or higher for residential floors, and PEI 4–5 for heavy traffic or commercial spaces. PEI 1–2 tiles are meant for walls and light use only. We make sure the tile matches where it’s going.
Yes — wood-look plank porcelain gives you the warmth and grain of wood with the waterproof toughness of tile. It’s ideal for bathrooms, laundry rooms and homes with pets, where real wood wouldn’t be a good fit.
Natural stone and cement-based grout should be sealed and periodically re-sealed; most glazed porcelain and ceramic does not need sealing. Epoxy and stain-resistant grouts cut down on maintenance. We seal what needs it as part of the job.
Tile is the gold standard for showers when it’s installed over proper waterproofing with the right slope and a quality pan. The waterproofing behind the tile is what prevents leaks — it’s where cheap shower jobs fail, and where we don’t cut corners.
Sweep or vacuum, then damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner — tile is one of the easiest floors to keep clean. Keep grout fresh by wiping spills and cleaning it periodically; re-seal cement grout as needed.
